Local press gets poetry

April 10, 2011

In only a few months, the poetry open-mic has become a fixture in the Flathead Valley, attracting a dozen poets and standing-room only crowds some weeks. And now we’ve attracted the attention of the local newspaper, with a fabulous writeup and photos:

The Kalispell "Get Poetry" Open Mic

Julie Laing reads one of her poems on Sunday, March 6, at the Boiler Room in Kalispell. Laing has begun co-facilitating a writing work shop with Leigh Ann DiDomenico prior to the poetry readings every week beginning at 2.

Performance poets: Local writers give voice to their words at open-microphone events, Story and photos by Brenda Ahearn/Daily Inter Lake

Update: The Daily Inter Lake published one of my poems, “Inspiration,” along with the story in its print version, but the poem was not put up as part of the online story. You can read my poem here, and you can hear me read it at the “Get Poetry” Open Mic in the second clip here.

For my part, I’m honored to know such a dedicated group of people. These talented poets are willing to come out each week not just to share their work but also to support other poets, give feedback during the writing workshop, haul speakers onto the stage, take and share photos and video, and tirelessly promote the event. We in the Flathead Valley are so lucky to have the energy of Leigh Ann DiDomenico, the support for arts of The Boiler Room coffeehouse, the technical skills of Mat Lee of The Jamhole for live podcasts and YouTube clips, and the dedication of everyone else involved in the Kalispell “Get Poetry” Open Mic. It makes me realize how lucky I was to just walk into established poetry communities in Orange County, London, and San Francisco. And I now know the joy and hard work involved in creating such a scene.
